About patterns and oven mitts
Aftens oven mitt is a timeless and simple pattern based on aftens Christmas stocking. It is worked in thick wool that is lightly felted afterwards. The oven mitt is worked with a few simple techniques like increases, decreases and Kitchener’s stitch. Once the mitt is knitted and felted, it can be decorated with embroidery. There are some suggestions with instructions in the pattern. I hope this pattern can inspire many lovely gifts, perhaps an oven mitt for a great cook you love, or a baker in the family, a grandmother, a son or a good friend. I also hope that the smaller oven mitt can help to inspire the children in their play kitchens. Perhaps older children can participate in decorating their own mitts? Bring out the creativity and a ball of yarn.
Note! The oven mitts are not fully insulated and do not provide safe protection for the hottest cookware. For more protection, consider adding padding.
Yarn alternatives
Most untreated wool (i.e. not superwash) can be used, and even if the gauge is not exact by a stitch or so, will likely give a good result. It will affect the size slightly. Thicker yarn will give a larger mitt, and thinner yarn will give a smaller mitt. Here are some suggestions:
Single strand - Fritidsgarn from Sandnes Garn, Vams from Rauma garn
Double strand- Finull from Rauma Garn, Tove from Sandnes Garn
