About the garment and pattern

The Sval Vea Cardigan is a light, summery cardigan designed with my grandparents at Vea in mind. They are such a wonderful duo – my grandmother is classic and delicate, and my grandfather is grounded and traditional. So when I set out to design a collection inspired by them, it naturally became a traditional aran-style cardigan in soft linen and cotton. A sweater that is just as lovely in the garden as it is on a boat trip or at Sunday dinner. The pattern combines cables and diamonds – and if I have understood correctly, cables symbolize happiness and diamonds symbolize wealth. And if there is anywhere I have always felt happy and rich in life, it is with my grandparents at Vea.

The Vea Cardigan is a relaxed, breezy garment featuring cables and diamond patterns, slightly wide sleeves, and a rounded rolled neckline. To find the right size, measure the chest at its widest point and add 20+ cm for an oversized fit or 10 cm for a more fitted version, then choose the size closest to that measurement. The cardigan is a shorter style, but it can easily be made longer by extending the body before dividing for the front and back pieces.

The cardigan is worked flat from the bottom up. The body is divided under the arms to create armholes, and then the front and back pieces are worked separately. Stitches are bound off in the center to shape the neckline, and a few short rows are worked at the top of the back. Once the body and yoke are complete, the pieces are joined at the shoulders using Kitchener stitch. Stitches are then picked up along the front edges to knit the button bands in ribbing, and along the neckline to knit the collar in Stockinette stitch. Finally, stitches are picked up for the sleeves, which are worked in the round with cables and diamond patterns, incorporating decreases toward the cuffs.
